Buffalo Grove, IL

Buffalo Grove is a quaint town, officially called a Village, about 30 miles northwest of Chicago, spanning over both Lake and Cook County. Today, the suburb has around 40,000 people, but its original inhabitants were varying Native American tribes. The tribes were forced West after the Treaty of Chicago, and German immigrants set up in Buffalo Grove afterward to farm in the 1830s. Farming continued to be a significant part of life there, even up through the end of World War II. But as soldiers returned home from war and were able to purchase new houses, farmers' children decided to take up other businesses, and new highways connected Buffalo Grove to new places that started to change.

Despite the shift away from farming, Buffalo Grove still does quite a bit to honor and preserve its outdoor space. Lake County manages 408 acres of the Buffalo Creek Forest Preserve, including forest, beautiful prairie, and wetlands to go fishing. There are also 5.5 miles of trails approved for hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing, with plenty of opportunities to see beautiful wildlife.

The city is also known for its fantastic park system, which includes dog parks, pools, fitness centers, disc golf courses, and more. The Raupp Museum even features educational gardens and nature-driven classrooms, with activities and displays to teach visitors about the area's rich history. The parks also host year-round events, including fairs, festivals, and fishing derbies.

If you have an appetite, try out the cozy atmosphere and fresh ingredients at the All-American restaurant Prairie House. Locals seem to pick the Prairie House Tavern as their go-to joint, whether you're after some pizza, brisket, and ribs, a burger, or something light like a salad.

If you're looking for a good date-night spot, visit Vin 90 Kitchen and Bar, a gastropub serving Asian-American fusion dishes right within the Arboretum Gold Club. Take your loved one to practice their swing indoors with golf simulators, then sit down for a romantic meal.

You can visit the Long Grove Confectionary Co if you have a sweet tooth. The shop was built originally in Long Grove but had to move to a larger production facility in Buffalo Grove. The Buffalo Grove location offers tours where you can see the sweets being made and even get to sample one. If you're lucky, you'll taste their famed Myrtle treat, made of roasted pecans doused in caramel and chocolate.

Or maybe you'd like to cook up your own food. If so, from June through October, the Buffalo Grove Farmers' Market has over 30 vendors with freshly-picked, locally-grown fruits and vegetables, farm-raised meats, cheese, eggs, and hand-crafted jams and baked goods.
